The concentration of formaldehyde that is carcinogenic is said to be detectable at 0.8 ppm, and at 20.0 ppm, it can cause irritation deep in the respiratory tract, potentially leading to breathing difficulties. In this case, the concentration of formaldehyde in the raw gas was extremely high at 200 to 300 ppm, posing a significant health risk to nearby residents and workers. After primary treatment with a biodenitrifier, the concentration was reduced to 2 ppm, allowing for exhaust without the need for a secondary treatment system, and there were no complaints from the neighbors. Since tar substances are also decomposed, there was no adhesion to the pit walls, which helped keep running costs down and was very well received.
